IAQ Profile

This page describes steps that a facility manager should take to establish an IAQ Profile. An IAQ Profile establishes the current status of air quality in the building and acts as the basis for future improvements.

Many of the items in this list come from the US EPA's Building Air Quality document.

Outside Air Intakes

  1. Automated dampers functioning?
  2. Are there potential pollution sources near the intakes?
    1. Standing water
    2. Exhaust fans
    3. Cooling towers
    4. Garbage recepticals
  3. How far are the potential pollution sources from the intakes?
  4. What is the condition of the bird screen?
  5. Is there any new construction being performed near by?
  6. Are any landscaping activities that may include insecticide application taking place.
  7. Are there any vehicles ideling near the intake?

Mixing Box

  1. Is it clean?
  2. Is it airtight?
  3. Is the mixing box under a positive pressure, possibly preventing outdoor air?
  4. Has large mixing boxes been being used as storage for maintenance equipment such as ladders?
  5. Are there signs of moisture or water accumilaction?

Filters

  1. What type of filters are in place? (e.g. box, bag, electrostatic, gas phase)
  2. What is their efficiency?
  3. What is the condition of filter?
  4. Are the fiters wet?
  5. Is there any mold growth on the filters?
  6. Are there any odors associated with the filters?
  7. Is there any bypass of air around filters?
  8. What is the pressure drop across the filters? Is this in line with manufacturer's specifications?
  9. Is there an existing maintenance schedule for changing or maintaining the filters?
  10. What is the condition of the filter housing or racks? Rusty? Dirty? Need of repairs?

Pollution Sources

  1. Where are all the drain traps?
  2. Where are all the restrooms?
  3. Where is garbage stored?
